Teenage Goth

My gothy little sister is 16 next week [stop drooling, Sevitz]. Amongst other things, I want to give her some music for her birthday, and I’m planning a mix CD.
Currently her favourite band seems to be Him. She and I have both seen Him live, but I can’t remember a single thing about it, and not for reasons of substance-altered mind, either. Apparently He made a better impression on Her.
We have chatted recently about the merits of certain tracks by Nine Inch Nails, and I am thinking perhaps Sanctified would be a good one. There will also be tracks by The Dears, and Foo Fighters, but after that I’m not quite sure where to go. Garbage? Pavement?
In my big sisterly kind of way, I want her to see that there is a musical world beyond Him; but I don’t want her to dislike it, and never listen to it. Does anyone out there have any good ideas?
n.b. She hates The Zutons.

  1. You know me so well …
Sisters of Mercy (Temple of Love extended Mix)
    Siouxse and the Banshees
    The Cure
    Alice Cooper (Poison)

  2. How about a sort of taster of where goths go when they stop being quite so unbearably Goth? i.e. later Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds is what I’m thinking.

  3. Apparently the new NIN single is out there in cyberspace somewhere (excitement….overwhelming….), you could hunt it down for her and give her a little suprise.
Oooh! ooh! You could give her tickets to the NIN gig this month! It’ll be goth city!

  4. The Bluetones: “Sky will fall” (on Return to the Last Chance saloon)
    Goo Goo Dolls: “Iris”
Neither Goth but might re-direct in time?

  5. She Sells Sanctuary.
You can’t have a goth CD without it!
And if you are going for any Cure tracks consider the remix album for more up-to-date take on things (someone you know MAY have it available on MP3.. if you ask that person nicely).
Er… Depeche Mode – 101 stuff? Personal Jesus?

  6. Now look, I’m trying to demonstrate that there is a world BEYOND goth, not just that they existed before she was born. This is not just an excuse for you lot to relive the 80s – put the god-damn eyeliner down!

  7. I’ll take her out and show her that their is a world beyond goth.
    Just happy to help.

  8. Alternatively just accept it’s a phase, and get her a copy of Depeche Mode’s “Black Celebration”.
Reliving the 80s? Never left ’em in the first place!
Alternatively, point her more in the direction of gothy rock – Cult’s “Electric” album, for instance.

  9. Oh, and anything by the Creatures. (Siouxsie without the Banshees, but with her husband. Siouxsie married, who’d a thunk it?)

  10. Or alternatively alternatively, point her in the direction of Lambchop’s cover of the Sisters of Mercy’s ‘This Corrosion’. Country ‘n’ Western Goth. Genius.

  11. Vaughan, that is a damn good suggestion. Do you happen to know anyone who has that in MP3 format?

  13. You know I’d be happy to oblige if I were able. However, I’ll be collecting a full refund for my deceased laptop tomorrow morning and may go straight out and spend it again on a shiny new box. I might even have some cash left over to put something in it…

  14. Give me a shout if you still need the Lambchop MP3, I have it.
