I’ve got it: my favourite song ever, and I suspect that you’re mostly going to hate it, which makes it good revenge for Morrissey: Thunder Road by Bruce Springsteen, whose dreary outlook was oh so much more poetical than The Smiths, and provided the soundtrack to my teens.
No? Well how about Take You To The Movies Tonight, which is very short, so will squeeze into any leftover minutes we have, and which Pete said possibly had the cutest little melody he had ever heard. Bet I can’t get hold of that on mp3. Bet you don’t know who it’s by.

It’s a town full of losers
Can’t complain about the boss now can we?
I will fully confess to formerly HATING Bruce Springsteen. I, of course, had got the wrong idea via ‘Born in the USA’ that he was flag-toting dumb patriot. Then one night, a very good friend of mine played me a selection of Springsteen’s back catalogue – and while I don’t yet own any of his stuff, I definitely ‘get it’ now. And he’s got some beautiful songs, definitely.

I’m still in pre-Vaughan “don’t get it” mode when it comes to Springsteen. And I HAVE heard Thunder Road. Ick.
Nick Hornby picked Thunder Road in 31 Songs, but I don’t get it myself (and I do own a Springsteen album…)

I thought it was a bit abrupt, but you’d said it was short. I have since found another copy that carries on further but unfortunately they launch into Back It Up (I presume) just where the first one finishes.
Soulseek is still on the lookout for it, so I’ll let you know if I have any more luck.
Cool. Of course, that’s still just a few seconds of the song in question, followed by Back It Up. The original, which I only have on tape, would be on an album by Grin, and probably no-one in the world has ever bothered to make it into an mp3.
